Central Park isn’t just a city park; it’s New York City’s backyard, a 843-acre green oasis in the middle of Manhattan’s chaos that is a nature reserve, baseball practice ground, dog park and running track all at once.
If you’re visiting the city, skipping it would be a mistake. It’s not just about trees and ponds—this place is packed with history, hidden gems, and more activities than you’d expect from a park. The trick is knowing where to go and what’s actually worth your time.
Start at the south end if you want the classic experience. Enter near 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, and you’ll immediately hit The Pond, where you can snap that picture-perfect skyline reflection. Walk a little further, and you’ll find yourself at The Mall, a straight, tree-lined pathway that feels like it belongs in a movie—because it does. Hollywood loves this spot, so recreate your favourite magical moments for the ‘Gram.
Keep going north, and you’ll reach Bethesda Terrace, one of the park’s most famous locations, complete with an ornate fountain, a grand staircase, and buskers that range from incredible to questionably talented.
If you’re up for something less obvious, check out the Ramble, a wilder section of the park with winding trails and the occasional raccoon sighting. For views, climb up Belvedere Castle, a mini castle with one of the best vantage points in the park.
If you’re visiting in winter, the Wollman Rink offers iconic ice skating with the skyline as a backdrop. In summer, you’ll want to rent a bike or a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse instead.
Don’t underestimate how big the park is. Walking the whole thing takes hours, so plan ahead. Stick to the southern half if you’re short on time, and don’t waste money on overpriced carriage rides—walking or renting a Citi Bike is the way to go. Grab a hot dog, find a good bench, and just take it all in.
